Home ownership seems much more important and prevalent in the US compared to New Zealand. It is very common to rent and there is no stigma attached to it. Many people rent because they prefer to. Means you don't have to worry about maintenance and you can move easily. I guess it depends how important a "home" is to people. Its an interesting perspective. Our house is for sale and if we sell it for less than we owe...and considering we bought in the peak of the real estate market in '03 AND we're live in this bankrupt state...we'll be renting too in Dallas.
